Brief description and main aims

The “Fundación la Luz” is a project that has been running for 19 years, working to prevent and treat addiction. They offer a process of rehabilitation to people recovering from addiction. It’s a process based on quality and experience, treating physical, mental and emotional health, as well as encouraging 
intra-familiar and social interaction. It also seeks to provide a professional future.

Main Activities

•Group interventions which try to change behavior conducts and pathologies which are results of their drug addiction
•Teaching of professions (e.g. informatics, English, bakery)
•Accompaniment through support groups
•Individual orientations which motivate them to stay in the treatment
•Clinic and therapeutic interventions.

Volunteer tasks

• To help a lot with administration
• To talk with patients in their spare time
• Do physical sporting activities with the group
• Teach a second language to the patients
•Help with the other branches of the institution as and when necessary
 

Volunteer requirements / Skills

•Dynamic and flexible
•Tolerant and patient when confronting potentially frustrating situations
• Able to follow instructions and authority
• Self-motivated to create own projects
• Strong-minded
• Eager to show initiative
• Basic Spanish skills are recommended
 
Important: You need to be proactive, self-motivated and full of ideas to work with young people. You must understand that living inside the project comes with responsibilities as there are rules and regulations to follow, respecting the internal dynamics of the organization. You must be independent, open minded, committed and responsible.

Location

Barbosa is about one hour away from Medellin, bus system is quite good and easy to travel from there.

Hosting Situation (Board and Lodging)

Living in the project. The volunteer will be living at the foundation together with the psychologists, therapists, and university students conducting their 
practice. 
 
Volunteer has to be male, and he will be sharing dorm and bathroom with 4 
professionals.
