About

The main propose of the project is to provide a Centre for disabled children with rehabilitation needs. It is run by the Catholic Church. The centre hosts children with various disabilities. A lot of them just appear one day, without anything being known about their past and their family circumstances. In the centre they are given a home and care with the rehabilitation offering them possibilities to work.

The main activity of this project is to create a place for the children to feel at home and to feel to be wanted, having someone to take care of them und help them with all the things they need. Older children can – if their disability allows – go to public schools or to university.

Location

The project is located in a very residential area of Maputo City. It is an area that offers many facilities, is very safe and easy to access from any point of Maputo.

Volunteer Tasks

The tasks of the volunteers may vary according to the daily schedule fixed by the organisation but the following are routine of the centre:

• To take care of the children with meals, personal hygiene
• Help them to adjust to life in the centre, e.g. wearing clothes
• Pay attention to them
• Help with the physiotherapy, language skills and other tasks, like taking children to the hospital

Volunteer Requirements

• Willingness to work with children
• Be flexible and able to adapt to a new culture and Christian religious habits and rules
• The ability to communicate verbally in Portuguese will improve your experience and the areas you can work in
• Skills or knowledge in arts and crafts are extremely helpful
• Experience with children of all ages who are differently abled
• Patience

Volunteers stay with local host families.
