Brief description and main aims

This is an educational centre established in 2015 by Mr. Magesa George who is a professional teacher graduated in 2017 from the University of Dar es Salaam College of Education (DUCE).

The centre focuses to ensure that children from 2 – 5 years regardless of their family economic status and other circumstances could understand, embrace, enjoy and access early-childhood education.

Apart from day-care and nursery school, MAGESA Open School also offers program secondary examination resisters, qualified test (QT), primary and secondary students with additional skills after they class time.

Main Activities

Primary target of the centre is to provide learning and playing space for children from low-income families in Gongo la Mboto and neighborhood areas. For the intake of 2020, the centre hosted 40 young girls and boys.

Volunteer tasks

  • Teaching kids to count in English
  • Teaching kids English, drawing and painting
  • Organizing sports and games
  • Helping local staff members to prepare home work for the kids 
  • Supporting with administrative work and financial management
  • Taking care of the kids
  • Teaching kids to swim

Volunteer requirements / Skills

This project is suitable for volunteers who:

  • Are at least 18 years of age at the time of arrival
  • Have a good knowledge of spoken and written English
  • Enjoy spending time with children (Having previous teaching or childcare experience is an advantage) 

Location

MAGESA Open School is located in Dar es Salaam at Gongo la Mboto, one of the biggest slum communities in the Ilala district of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The community has population of about 60,000 residents, majority are living in an extreme poverty. Approximately, 5 Km from Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA).

Hosting Situation (Board and Lodging)

Volunteers will stay with a host family. The host families provide 2 meals a day, while lunch is provided at the project.

  • ATM is available in this area. Local transport can be used to reach more central areas of Dar es Salaam
  • Mini supermarket is located on the way to the project
  • Volunteers can bring comic books, pencils and toys for the children
