Brief description and main aims

Sri Venkateshwara Health, Educational, Cultural and Charitable Trust (R) Venkateshwara Primary School was established in 1994 and the education concept stared in 2002. This school was founded for and by  farmers and their families since there is a lack of opportunities in this particular area. A group of farmers decided to invest and collect donations from people in the community to start  a school in order to provide a sustainable and  high quality education.
 
The school started with 30 children who are realted to the farmers whoc took the iniciative to open this school. Currently, there are around 250 children from around 20 villages attending this school and 16 staff memebrs. 60% of the children we provide an education for live below the poverty line. Our students come from different casts and follow different religions.
 
We aim to provide an education to all, raise awareness about education in rural areas and involve parents in thier child's development and health.

Volunteer tasks

The volunteer is expected to:

  • Assist Teachers
  • Teach / home school new entrants
  • Tell stories focusing on morals and values
  • Teach extracurricular activities (crafts, painting, music, dance)
  • Engage children in sports activities in the evenings
  • Teach English classes to children / staff
  • Celebrate festivals with staff and children
  • Assist in organizing outings / picnics
  • Assist in organizing fun camps during holidays

Volunteer requirements / Skills

The volunteer should:
  • be a female
  • have strong English teaching skills and knowledge
  • demonstarte good behaviour 
  • have a positive attitude
  • be service oriented and friendly natured 
  • be able to adpat  since they will be experiencing anew culture -differneces should be taken in a positive way
Having skills in teaching, sports, music, arts and other specialised skills that are unique to the volunteers are preferable. People with additional work experience with children are preferred.

Location

Our school is located in Sundarapalya, which is in the middle of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh area. It belongs to Karnataka. Sundarpalya is located around 38 km from Kolar district and 100km from Bangalore. The village has around 2000 inhabitants. They are very friendly, creating a bery pleasant atmosphere. Many religions are practiced here. We cultivate black wheat, corn, toor dal, and silk. We aslo provide a lot of  milk in this area.
 

Hosting Situation (Board and Lodging)

The volunteer will live with a host family.
