Brief description and main aims

The First High School for Hearing Impaired (FHSHI) is a high school in Cebu City to serve persons with hearing disabilities since 1982. It offers relevant educational opportunities to persons with disabilities (hearing impaired, visually impaired, those with learning disabilities, the physically handicapped). We have been aiming to get the learners back to school and that they can see it as a place of fun with friendly and fostering atmosphere for learners to be functionally literate.

Main Activities

  • Assist teachers with lesson preparations, research and prepare visual presentations, compile activities especially in the speech/language sessions and classes
  • Support at least 1 or 2 special education teachers during implementation in speech/language classes
  • Organize intercultural activities for the teachers and students
  • Support extracurricular activities/clubs like music, arts and crafts, sports, etc.
  • School improvements
(Note: with the new setup due to pandemic, expect to be exposed to teaching and organising other activites in an online enviroment)

Volunteer tasks

  • Develop/prepare learning materials and visual aids
  • Assist the teachers in daily classes
  • Facilitate sports activities/events for the students and PWD
  • Assist other relevant activities of the organization

Volunteer requirements / Skills

  • Sociable and can easily mingle with staff, volunteers without prejudices, etc.
  • Independent and requires less supervision
  • Willing to learn sign language
  • Innovative, industrious, adventurous, creative and fun loving
  • Computer skills

Location

The project is located in San Nicolas, Cebu City.

Hosting Situation (Board and Lodging)

The volunteer will live with a host family (expect to have a shared room with your host sister or brother).
