Fundación AHLE – Acción Humana de la Luz Eterna (HON-56)

Type: Socially Excluded Groups: Minorities - Country: Honduras

Brief description and main aims

Fundación AHLE – Acción Humana de la Luz Eterna is a non-profit and non-governmental centre, founded in 2003, that offers housing, feeding and schooling to at-risk male children and youth, aged 6-18, that come from challenging socioeconomic backgrounds and/or are orphans. The main donors of the centre are from the USA (particularly from Fort Lauderdale, Florida) and Germany (particularly from Hamburg).

The centre has a scholarship programme that supports approximately 40-45 at-risk female children and youth that do not live within the premises, but allows them to attend school, use the computer lab and take additional classes within the centre.

AHLE’s main aims are:

  • offer at-risk children and youth a safe and decent home with a healthy lifestyle and environment
  • prevent violence and drug-related issues through education of at-risk children and youth
  • re-establish family and social bonds allowing at-risk children and youth to re-integrate into society with moral values, knowledge and skills provided by training and education.

Main Activities

  • Approximately 70 at-risk male children and youth, ages 6-18 live within the centre, and an approximate of 45 at-risk female children and youth, ages 6-18, don’t live within the centre but are supported through the centre’s scholarship programme.
  • The centre provides a safe and decent home to all the children and youth, who live in different dormitories that have bunk beds, lockers and closets, and bathrooms with several showers, toilets and washbasins. The children and youth are grouped according to their ages in the different dormitories.
  • The centre provides all meals to the children and youth, making sure they receive a proper nutrition.
  • The children and youth attend the local public pre-school, primary school and secondary school. The centre’s staff help the children and youth with their homework and provide tutoring / reinforcement lessons.
  • Additionally to the formal education that the children and youth are receiving outside of the centre, within the centre they receive training on auto-mechanic, welding, music (particularly in the following instruments: keyboard, guitar, drums, and bass guitar), computer lessons and English classes.
  • The centre has excellent recreational areas, including sports facilities like a football field and multipurpose fields for basketball, volleyball, etc. There’s also a swimming pool where children and youth can learn to swim.
  • The centre also organises different outings, sports and cultural events, and fundraising events. Sometimes certain facilities are rented to external publics for lodging, carrying out events, using the swimming pool, among others, this way creating an income for the centre.
  • The centre also has an in-house hen house and garden that produces organic eggs and vegetables. This produce supplies the centre’s kitchen and is also sold in the community. Children and youth are involved in these activities and learn how to raise chickens and hens, and take care of crops.

Volunteer tasks
