Brief description and main aims

CREER- Centro de Rendimiento Educativo Especial “RENACER” is a non-profit centre specialised in providing education and rehabilitation for children with a brain injury and autism. The centre develops a comprehensive programme of education and rehabilitation oriented to the cerebral reeducation of children and youth with a brain injury in order to let them strengthen their physical, intellectual, physiological and social skills and abilities.

Main Activities

CREER carries out different activities based on Dr. Glenn Doman’s methodology of cerebral reeducation, comprised in these main programmes:

• Physical Neurological Growth: to stimulate mobility, balance and manual skills.
• Intellectual Neurological Growth: to stimulate the five senses.
• Physiological Neurological Growth: to improve cerebral oxygenation.
• Social Neurological Growth: to help children and youth understand that they can live a worthy life.

Volunteer tasks

The volunteer can participate in any of the activities carried out at the centre, assisting the different therapists and educators in each programme, such as:

• the Physical Neurological Growth programme where many physical exercises are organised
• the Intellectual Neurological Growth programme helping educators to teach about numbers, words, images, etc.
• the Physiological Neurological Growth programme using hydrotherapy
• the Social Neurological Growth programme organising different games and interactive activities.

Volunteer requirements / Skills

• be at least 18 years old
• have basic knowledge of Spanish
• be very interested and motivated to work with children and youth with disabilities
• be patient
• be affectionate but also have a firm personality
• be proactive
• be physically fit

Location

The project is located in San Pedro Sula, Cortés.

Hosting Situation (Board and Lodging)

The volunteer will live with a host family.
