Brief description and main aims

Casa Hogar Temporal BENCALETH is a non-profit and non-governmental centre which takes care of children and youth, who are mostly orphans, suffering from multiple disabilities, such as muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, meningitis effects, microcephaly, and blindness, among others.

Main Activities

The children and youth, usually aged 4-17, live within the centre, where they can attend school, receive physical and educational therapy, and participate in different kinds of activities. The centre mainly provides them medication, special education, board and lodging, different types of therapies, love, and artistic and leisure activities to help their social development.

Volunteer tasks

The volunteer can support any of the activities carried out in the centre, such as:

• helping the educators to organise and facilitate classes
• teach subjects like art, sports and English
• accompany children and youth to field trips
• help therapists during physical therapy sessions (the volunteer will be trained and accompanied by a professional therapist)
• organise any kind of activity to spend time with the children, youth and staff members

Volunteer requirements / Skills

• be at least 18 years old.
• have basic knowledge of Spanish.
• have minimum a high school degree, although studies on rehabilitation with people with disabilities is highly appreciated
• be a mature person, responsible, flexible and be very proactive.

Location

The project is located in Tegucigalpa, Francisco Morazán.

Hosting Situation (Board and Lodging)

The volunteer will live with a host family.
