Brief description and main aims

 The center hosts around 76 deaf children, from 4 to 20 years old. The building is linked with the one of a public school, it was a government initiative to decide that this space would be allocated to deaf children schooling. The objective of this project is to provide scholar support and organize sportive and artistic activities with deaf children.
 

Cultural Exposure

The center hosts several deaf children but is also a school for children that don't have this problem. The volunteers will take part in the everyday life of the center and be able to observe their habits and way of life through practical and social involvement. They will get in touch with national volunteers and social workers in the center so that they can get involved in the community, not only inside the center but also outside, when they finish work.

Main Activities

In the school common spaces such as the playground are shared with the kids of the public school which encourage the social integration of the ones with special needs.  The children study from 9 am to 15 pm in 7 classrooms with a maximum of 16 students in each one.
 
The children have lunch in the school around 1 pm and they bring their own food. Summer holidays are in July and August.
 
The center organizes leisure activities and offers support to the teachers for languages classes and artistic and sportive activities (basketball, football, karate...).
 
They also carry out workshops: Painting – Kitchen – literacy – Music –Outdoors excursions, etc. One of the main focus is to foster self-appreciation in the heart of the children through a skill-based approache.
 

Volunteer tasks

  • Organize leisure activities for deaf children (games, singing session, drawing, etc.)
  • Help the teachers and social workers carry out the workshops, the sportive activities, the scholar supports
  • Accompany them in their daily tasks.
 
Volunteers can participate in all the project activities described above.
The center also organizes outdoors activities in which the volunteers can take part.
 
The volunteers will rotate between different age groups, although the tasks would remain basically the same.
 
The normal timetable is 9am to 15pm.

Volunteer requirements / Skills

  • No previous working experience requiredalthough plastic arts skills and interest in sports would give extra quality to the project.
  • Enthusiastic, positive, patient and respectful people needed.
  • People psychologically prepared to work with disabled children.
  • Willingness to develop ties with other nationalities and learn new things, of course we encourage everyone to follow the pace they feel comfortable with.

Hosting Situation (Board and Lodging)

The volunteers will live in a host family where they will be given 3 meals per day. Further information will be given in due time.
