About

Women in Recycling Foundation (WORF) is registered as a non-profit entity with a mission of empowering girls and women, promoting environmental sustainability, and strengthing climate resilience through effective waste management and recycling practices. Through its initiatives, WORF has empowered more than 100 families to earn additional income by collecting and supplying plastic waste for recycling. Recently, the project has processed over 500 tons of plastic bottles, transforming them into durable construction bricks that contribute to sustainable building solutions while reducing plastic pollution.

Their acctivities include:

Skills Training: Comprehensive training on waste sorting, processing, and recycling techniques

Business Development: Business planning, financial management, marketing strategies, and creativity

Mentorship: Ongoing support and guidance from experienced entrepreneurs and industry experts

Location

The project is located in Buza, in the southern part of Dar es Salaam, a vibrant and community-oriented neighbourhood. The area is generally considered safe during daylight hours and has experienced rapid residential growth over the past decades, accompanied by improvements in infrastructure and access to social services.

Accommodation

Volunteers are accommodated with a secure and welcoming host family located approximately 5–10 km (accessible by public transport) from the project site. The host family provides a comfortable shared room for volunteers, three meals per day, and safe boiled drinking water, ensuring a supportive and homely living environment throughout their stay.

Volunteer Tasks

• Develop education materials and facilitate workshops and outreach activities
• Assist the recycling team in sorting, cleaning, and processing plastic waste into construction bricks while learning about sustainable recycling technologies
• Facilitate training sessions on financial literacy, digital skills, marketing, or business development for women involved in the recycling programme
• Create social media content, take photos and videos, write success stories, update newsletters
• Assist in developing fundraising proposals and donor reports to showcase WORF’s impact
• Assist in collecting and analysing data on recycling outputs, environmental impact, and community benefits
• Support project planning, monitoring and evaluation, and research on best practices in waste management and climate resilience
• Participate in tree planting, beach clean-up and climate community sensitisation activities.

Volunteer Requirements

• Confident in speaking in public and sharing knowledge through community sensitisation or public engagement.
• Demonstrated interest in girls’ and women’s financial independence
• Interest/experience or basic knowledge in sustainable waste management
• Committed to work in the field of recycling and environmental protection
• Professional or intermediate in any of the following fields: communication, digital content creation, monitoring and evaluation; fundraising and proposal writing
• Ability to speak and write in English
