About the Project

Hormigón Armado focuses on supporting shoeshine boys and street children/youth in La Paz City’s PRADO/CENTRAL area, with a total of 50 shoeshiners and an additional 150 family members receiving support, particularly in emergency cases. Acknowledging that approximately 2% of this population may struggle with addictions and substance abuse, the organization is dedicated to defending and protecting the rights of these young workers. Their integrated approach aims to foster personal development, growth, and improved living conditions.

Key initiatives include:

  • Cultural Newspaper Hormigón Armado: Published bimonthly for nine years, this newspaper costs 4 Bs, with 1 Bs contributing to a health fund for emergencies and 3 Bs going to the seller. It covers topics such as culture, human rights, and environmental conservation.
  • Weekly Workshops: Held every Saturday, these workshops address various themes including sexual education, dental care, human rights, human trafficking, first aid, and domestic violence.
  • Technical Education Support: Annually, 30 shoeshiners or their immediate family members receive full scholarships for technical courses ranging from six months to three years, or for three-year degree programs.
  • Pedagogical Support: Children who work and study simultaneously receive economic subsidies for school supplies and food. They attend sessions twice a week for academic support and to develop their school activities.
  • Shoe Shine Workers’ Tour: Trained shoeshine boys act as guides, leading tours around popular city areas to showcase everyday customs. The director of Hormigón Armado coordinates these tours.
