Brief description and main aims

Our goal of service is to address the process of social change and development of all the children who have lost their parents, through a holistic and well formulated strategic development and economic plan.
 
Our aims are to:
  • Serve as an emergency placement centre for children who are traumatised by their loss and lack of a secure home environment.
  • Provide a safe environment in addition to a healthy, daily care-giving programme.
  • Build relationships with the broader community and provide resources wherever possible.
  • Support and initiate programmes and facilitate workshops for the development of children in our care.
  • Comply with relevant legislative matters that involve children via all three tiers of Government, NGO’s and CBO’s and to network potential resources.
  • Promote awareness of Baitul Ansaar’s mission to all sectors of the community.
  • Actively gear towards addressing the needs and protection of the children by improving their social skills and the realisation to self-reliance.
  • Stimulate the full potential of all the children towards a status of self confidence and self reliance which will stand them in good stead as they progress towards the next level.
  • Equip the children to deal with the problems via life skills programmes.

Main Activities

  • There is a structured Educare program (children from 3 – 6 yrs), with outings playing an important part of the children’s learning experience.
  • Afternoons are devoted to: homework time, extra mural activities and religious time and lessons.
 

Volunteer tasks

Volunteers will be inducted upon arrival and receive appropriate training.
Theuir tasks include:
  • Accompanying care-givers when they take children to the hospitals for their therapies
  • Assisting with homework
  • Assisting care-givers with meal times, bath times and bed times.
  • Assisting with the Edu – care program
  • Administrative, fund raising &  marketing assistance
  • Assist with outings

Hours of work for volunteers are normally from 8am to 4pm Mondays to Fridays.

  • Have a passion for working with vulnerable children.

Location

MitchellsPlain – is an urban township situated about between 25 and 30 kilometres outside of Cape Town Central and 20 kilometres from Cape Town International Airport. It is the largest ‘colored township’ on the Cape Flats.

Mitchells Plain is an area where many of the people were displaced under the Group areas Act (1960’s) This has led to many socio- economic problems and the challenges faced by organisations like Baitul Ansaar in ensuring that children have a safe haven and proper care who comes form abuse and neglected homes from all over Cape Town

Hosting Situation (Board and Lodging)

 Accommodation and food is provided by a Host Family inside the suburbs of Mitchell’s Plain.

It will serve as a plus for those who intend to study in the field of Social Work, Occupational Therapy or Child Care.

This project will not suit volunteers who are not comfortable working within a Muslim-based organisation or religious- affiliated organisation.
