Brief description and main aims

Special Olympics Morocco organizes a variety of sports training and athletic competitions, with a focus on 19 official sports such as aquatics, athletics, badminton, bocce, bowling, cycling, equestrian, football (soccer), gymnastics, handball, powerlifting, softball, table tennis, tennis, volleyball, floor hockey, snowshoeing, and the Young Athletes Program (YAP). Additionally, the organization conducts other development programs, including Athlete Leadership Programs (ALPs).
 
The size of the organization in terms of participants was mentioned in the 2013 census, with 10,958 registered athletes and participants and 562 coaches. The goal was set to reach 12,800 athletes and participants by the end of 2015.
 
The target group includes children and adults with intellectual disabilities who are interested in participating in sports and athletic competitions. The organization also involves families, coaches, and the community in its mission.
 
Aims of the project:
The aim of Special Olympics Morocco is to provide yearround sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. The organization seeks to give individuals with intellectual disabilities ongoing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community.

Volunteer tasks

• From 4 to 8 hours of work per day from Monday to Friday
• Participate in the everyday running of the association 
• The volunteers can ask to work on any of the different activities and sections of the association, and if they express any 
preferences they will be oriented to where there is need of extra hands.
• Assist the realization of leisure activities and workshops 
 
If the volunteers have any knowledge and/or interest in the matter, they can assist the paramedical staff.

Location

The project is locate in Rabat, Morocco. Rabat is the capital and fourth largest city of Morocco with an average population of 580,000 people. It combines both Mediterranean and Oceanic influences on many aspects. Rabat's climate is mild and tempered, with cool winters and warm summer days. 
 
The city is quite dynamic as far as cultural activity is concerned thanks to many tructures (Theatre Mohammed V, Cinema Renaissance, official galleries and the Archaeological Museum) and active associative work. 

Hosting Situation (Board and Lodging)

Volunteers will be placed in host families. Further information will be given in due time.
