Character And Education Institute (CEI) (TAI-37)

Type: Education: Teaching languages - Country: Taiwan

Brief description and main aims

Character And Education Institute (CEI) was founded in April 2008 and works with local elementary school provide 5 day camp for 10-year-old students. CEI course mainly focuses on the cultivation of core character and key abilities, as well as improvement of English interest and ability.

Main Activities

  • To use our classes and interaction with our students as foreigners to expand their view and knowledge of the world;
  • To set an example for the students in the good character and conduct that the CEI schools teach;
  • To show the students that learning English can be fun!

Volunteer tasks

The volunteer's tasks include:
  • Teach or assistant teach in all English classes. The volunteer is responsible for developing and preparing their lessons and for starting and ending their classes punctually.
  • Assist with some activities in the Character classes throughout the week. These will be explained to the volunteer by the English Teaching Affairs teacher.
  • Assist  the students if an emergency situation occurs on campus after hours.
  • On some evenings, you may have the option of going to the dorms to play with or sing good-night to the students. Male teachers are not allowed in the girl’s dorms.

The English team is expected to:
  • Help look after and interact with the students on the playground when the students are let out for their 10 min. break time between each 40 min. class period.
  • Help serve lunch to the students. The volunteer may ask to help with other meals if they want to.

Work schedule:
  • Work hours at CEI are from 8:00am to 5:00pm Monday through Friday. The English team is expected to be in the office or classroom during these hours. In addition to day classes, the English team is scheduled to teach an evening class from 7:00-8:00 pm twice per week. During Camp weeks, volunteers may leave on Fridays at 3:00pm instead of 5:00 pm because they have put in these two evening hours earlier in the week.
  • Lunch break and rest time are from 12:30-1:30. English volunteers may go to their dorms if they wish to during this time after they have helped serve lunch to the students.
  • There will be some weeks scheduled each semester as office weeks with no students, and these are usually used for lesson planning, work training, and staff activities.  The English Team Leader will assign work projects and communicate with the volunteer's campus about what meetings or activities the volunteer is required to be present for that week. Volunteers may also do personal projects or work during this time if they are finished with any school related assignments. Work hours during office weeks are from 8:00am – 5:00pm, Monday to Friday.

Air conditioning is available in your dormitory.  CEI is strict about conserving energy, and it is necessary for the volunteer to follow the school’s Air Conditioning Management Policy. Details for this will be provided to the volunteer by the English Teaching Affairs teacher.

More Information

Many of the young students who come each week are from country communities and have never seen or had an opportunity to interact with foreigners. Your teaching provides them with a unique opportunity beyond what their schools might have to offer.

Throughout Taiwan, many students are well educated in English writing, reading, and grammar from textbooks, but have few opportunities to practice speaking and listening. This is a chance for them to use English for real life communication as they interact with us in classroom and/or in campus.  This can help them view English as a fun and valuable tool they can use to communicate with real people around the world and not just as another subject that they have to take in school.

Volunteers needed: 1 in each campus.
