Brief description and main aims

To educate approximately 205 students with special needs. To create a “safe haven” for disabled children, and to provide special therapy for them.

Main Activities

The projects activities revolve around different types of classes for the children and also workshops focused on fostering their autonomy and independence.

Volunteer tasks

The children are separated into 5 groups depending on their skills. With the younger children volunteers will change diapers, feed them, help the therapist with daily activities etc. With older children, volunteers help with arts and crafts, play games and practice their reading and writing skills. Depending on the volunteer’s experience, they can also assist the therapists.

Volunteer requirements / Skills

The volunteer should:
  • have good communication skills, be outgoing, caring and motivated
  • have a desire to work a lot with troubled children
  • be patient and proactive
  • have basic Spanish skills
Past experiences working with kids is a plus.

Location

The center is located in the outskirts of Ambato city which is about 3 hours outside of Quito.

The center is in a rural setting. Ambato is a fairly large city in Ecuador, with about two hundred and twenty thousand inhabitants, and is very calm.

Hosting Situation (Board and Lodging)

The volunteer will live with a Host family.
