About the Project

The “Cielo Azul” foundation supports 13 rural schools in the Otavalo region, serving indigenous and mestizo students from diverse backgrounds. Beyond formal education, activities include agriculture, environmental studies, sports, computer literacy, and arts. Families actively participate, contributing to school meals and gardens, fostering both education and food sovereignty within the communities.

Location

Communities in the rural surrounding of Otavalo, Imbabura*

* These communities are located between 30 minutes to 1 hour from the city of Otavalo.

Accommodation

During the week, volunteers immerse themselves in rural life by staying with local host families for 3-4 days, embracing a simple lifestyle with basic amenities (phone signal is reliable, though Wi-Fi and laundry facilities may be limited). A centrally located flat in Otavalo offers shared accommodation and common areas for all volunteers. Furthermore, weekly gatherings with the project coordinator foster a sense of community through shared experiences, activity planning, and problem resolution. Travel to these communities ranges from 30 minutes to 1 hour from Otavalo, presenting varied access and cultural dynamics.

Volunteer Tasks

Volunteers contribute from Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 1:30 PM, primarily in school areas such as English, Sports, and Arts. Beyond classroom support, opportunities include contributing to school gardens, organizing engaging workshops and free-time activities, and assisting children with homework. Volunteers may also participate in daily agricultural activities, a vital aspect of community life.

Volunteer Requirements

  • It’s an advantage to speak good Spanish because the local people’s mother tongue is Kichwa but the majority speaks Spanish.
  • Volunteers have to be very flexible, proactive and adaptable.
  • Volunteers have to communicate with people and integrate themselves within their community. For example by sharing meals or activities with the family and the teachers.
