About

The projects take place at the Manarul Mabrur Children’s Shelter, located in a suburban area approximately 30 minutes from Semarang city. The shelter accommodates around 80 children and young people, ranging from five-month-old babies to university students up to 20 years of age. They come from diverse social and geographical backgrounds across Indonesia.

The residents include approximately 20 babies under one year old, 30 children between one and five years old, and around 30 school-aged children and young people attending elementary, junior high and senior high school, as well as university. All of them live at the shelter.

The children and young people are supported by approximately 20 staff members, most of whom are relatives of the shelter’s founder. As the shelter has limited human resources to care for and support all residents, volunteers are needed to assist with daily activities and childcare.

Children are generally brought to the shelter by members of the local community or by their parents. In addition to providing accommodation and care, the shelter supports the residents in becoming more independent by offering entrepreneurship training and opportunities to put their skills into practice.

Volunteer Requirements

We welcome volunteers who enjoy caring for children and are interested in learning about Indonesian culture and language. Previous experience as an au pair, childcare worker or volunteer with children is an advantage, but it is not required.

Volunteers should:

  • Be patient, open-minded, tolerant, creative and flexible;

  • Have a genuine interest in supporting children and young people;

  • Respect local customs, cultural practices and the rules of the host organisation;

  • Be willing to share responsibilities and work cooperatively with staff and other volunteers;

  • Be able to adapt to simple living conditions at the project site;

  • Be in a condition that allows them to carry out the relevant childcare and daily support tasks;

  • Have no criminal convictions in their country of residence or in any other country;

  • Comply fully with the host organisation’s zero-tolerance policy regarding illegal drugs and controlled substances.

The host organisation aims to maintain a child-friendly and culturally appropriate environment. For this reason, volunteers may be asked to follow reasonable guidelines concerning visible tattoos, facial piercings and hairstyles while participating in the project. These guidelines will be discussed respectfully and in advance.

Applicants with piercings, tattoos, specific hairstyles or any disability or health condition are warmly encouraged to contact the host organisation before applying.
