About

The project supports the renovation of traditional dry stone walls as part of the regional alpine heritage. Foundation Stiftung Urgestein is a non-profit association aiming to create a community-based space for cultural, social and sustainable activities. Based on the “Synergy Village” principle, the project promotes exchange and a sharing learning experience, where volunteers contribute with their skills and effort and gain new experiences with intercultural connections. Local and international volunteers are involved in this intercultural project in the mountains.

Accommodation

Volunteers will stay in a traditional alpine hut (chalet). It is important that participants are aware that the facilities are basic: There is no Wi-Fi and no hot water. Everybody sleeps in sleeping bags. On weekends, volunteers will stay in a small apartment at the foot of the mountain.

Location

The project is located at Kaiseregg Mountain near Schwarzsee in the Canton of Fribourg. The site is a centuries-old former farm surrounded by beautiful nature.

Volunteer tasks

Volunteers will support dry stone wall renovation, do some simple landscape gardening and other outdoor maintenance or help cooking for the group. Together they help professional builders constructing drystone walls which are native to the region. In addition to the shared physical work, participants engage in intercultural workshops held outdoors, overlooking the beautiful mountain landscape.

Volunteer requirements

Volunteers should have basic English skills to ensure simple communication within the team. They must feel comfortable working in mountainous terrain and on uneven ground. A good level of physical fitness is required, as the work includes hiking in the Alps. Flexibility regarding tasks and workload, enjoyment of outdoor work and an interest in community life are essential.
