About

ZERRY Education Center is a daycare and pre-unit school located in Tandale, one of the well-known slum neighborhoods in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The centre provides an early childhood education and child development programme for children under the age of five. It has become a safe and nurturing space for young children, offering both academic and non-academic learning while their parents or guardians are at work. ZERRY plays a vital role in supporting the community by laying a strong foundation for lifelong learning and development in a challenging environment and for low-income families.

Their academic Kusoma ‘Reading’, Kuandika ‘Writing’ and Kuhesabu ‘Counting’; Sports & Arts for physical development, singing and dancing, English subjects, simple mathematics, drawing, coloring, book reading and storytelling.
Thier non-academic curriculum includes life skills, i.e. communication, public speaking, teamwork, problem solving, creativity; personal hygiene management as well as food and nutrition.

Location

The project is located in Tandale, 14106 Dar es Salaam. Tandale is a densely populated urban settlement (informal settlement) located in Kinondoni Municipality in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. It is known for its vibrant community life, but also for its socio-economic challenges.

Accommodation

Volunteers are accommodated in a hostel in a safe area located approximately 4 km from the project site. The hostel provides a comfortable shared room for volunteers, three meals per day, and safe boiled drinking water, ensuring a supportive and homely living environment throughout their stay.

Volunteer Tasks

  • Teach either academic or non-academic curriculum as an assistant teacher
  • Support as a caretaker in the nursery classes i.e. baby, middle or upper class
  • Help with preparing homework
  • Facilitate parental care sessions
  • Prepare learning facilities and materials
  • Participate in community outreach activities and home visits
  • Support with resource mobilisation

Volunteer Requirements

  • Be willing to work in Tanzania’s largest slum neighbourhood.
  • Show interest in early child education and childhood development
  • Be able to speak and write in English
  • Count with experience in kindergarten or teaching or have such a professional background
  • Be flexible and adaptable with the lifestyle
