About
Ndoto in Action (NIA) was founded by a group of young people who shared a vision of transforming the lives and aspirations of underprivileged children, particularly those in rural communities of Arusha. Later on the project registered as a non-profit organisation under the Ministry of Social Welfare. With education as its primary focus, NIA implements a range of initiatives to improve learning environments and student well-being in 16 public primary and secondary schools and empowering over 6000 children and youth from low-income families.
Their project activities focus on the following areas:
- School Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (SWASH): Promoting safe water, sanitation, and hygiene practices to improve students’ health and well-being.
- Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM): Supporting girls with menstrual health education and access to hygiene resources to improve school attendance.
- Construction and Renovation: Improving learning environments through classroom renovations and the construction of new classrooms where needed.
- School Gardens for Nutrition: Establishing school gardens to enhance food security, improve student nutrition, and reduce school dropout rates.
- Rainwater Harvesting (RWH): Installing rainwater harvesting systems to provide reliable access to clean water for schools.
- Teacher Training: Strengthening teachers’ skills through professional development to improve teaching quality and student learning outcomes.
Location
The project is located in Njiro, 2619-Arusha. Njiro is one of the fastest-growing and best-planned residential neighbourhoods in Arusha, Tanzania, located about 8–10 km from the city centre (15–30 minutes by road). It is home to a diverse population of local residents, professionals, students, expatriates, and families, creating a welcoming and multicultural environment. The neighbourhood is known for its organised housing, modern residential areas, and relatively quiet, clean, and secure surroundings.
Accommodation
Volunteers are accommodated with a host family located 7 km from the project. They stay in a shared room and are provided with basic meals during their stay, ensuring a comfortable and supportive living environment while engaging in project activities.
