About

AMITIGRA – Fundación Amigos de La Tigra is a non-profit organization dedicated to environmental conservation and the management of La Tigra National Park near Tegucigalpa, Honduras. The park is a vital forest ecosystem with rich biodiversity and an important source of freshwater for the capital and surrounding communities.

Founded in 1993, AMITIGRA works to sustainably manage the park through conservation, environmental education, and community development, supporting both ecosystem protection and local livelihoods.

Its main programmes include natural resource management (protection, restoration, and research), land use planning and climate adaptation, community engagement and environmental education, and ecotourism, including guided visits, eco-lodges, and canopy experiences.

Volunteer Tasks

  • Volunteer activities take place mainly in La Tigra National Park, about 30–40 minutes from Tegucigalpa, as well as at AMITIGRA’s office in Colonia Palmira. Tasks vary depending on the volunteer’s skills, interests, Spanish level, and organisational needs.
  • Volunteers may support community work in nearby villages such as Jutiapa, Limones, and Chaparro, assisting local entrepreneurs (e.g. flower, strawberry, and handicraft producers) through field visits, interviews, data collection, and reporting to promote sustainable livelihoods.
  • They can also contribute to the park’s public use programme by helping with environmental education materials, trail maintenance, and basic infrastructure (e.g. bridges, benches, signage), as well as supporting local volunteer coordination.
  • In addition, volunteers may assist with natural resource management activities, including biodiversity research such as installing camera traps, collecting field data, and participating in remote fieldwork and camping

Volunteer Requirements

  • Age: 20–40

  • Open to all genders

  • Basic Spanish and English skills

  • High school or university degree

Volunteers should have a strong interest in environmental work, enjoy outdoor activities, and be proactive, flexible, patient, and able to work well in a team.
