About

Fundación Gente Unida is a non-governmental organization established in 1995 to provide education and comprehensive support to children and young people in vulnerable situations. Its mission is to meet their educational and developmental needs while promoting continuous improvement, social responsibility, and an enhanced quality of life.

Currently, the foundation operates five educational centers in some of the most vulnerable areas of Medellín, providing food and educational support to more than 3,500 children, young people, and adults.

The project focuses on education and the promotion of key values and competencies, equipping participants with the tools needed to transform their lives and their communities.

At Hogar Bohío de María, where the volunteer will be placed, around 150 children and young people are supported. Many of them have experienced domestic violence, abuse, or abandonment.

Location

Medellín is the second-largest city in Colombia and is known as the “City of Eternal Spring” due to its year-round average temperature of around 24°C.

It is a vibrant and dynamic city, rich in music, gastronomy, art, events, and places to explore. Its people are known for their warmth and hospitality, creating a culture in which affection, respect, and joy are central.

Volunteer Tasks

  • Academic activities: supporting children and young people in primary and secondary school with their homework, as well as providing additional lessons to strengthen reading and writing skills.
  • Recreational activities: organizing educational and recreational games for children and young people, including sports activities.
  • Other activities: assisting with daily routines and accompanying children during their free time

Volunteer Requirements

The volunteer should have strong social values and a commitment to collective action in order to create better opportunities and positively impact the lives of children and young people in the project.

They should be committed, innovative, respectful, creative, and honest, and above all, sensitive to the realities faced by children in Colombia. A peaceful, respectful, and caring attitude towards others is essential.
