Folklore Museum – Institute for Southern Thai Studies, Thaksin University is the biggest museum in Southern, Thailand located in Yo Island, Songkhla lake with 8 acres of beautiful scenery. The Institute promotes traditional local knowledge. The museum also has a souvenir shop and a café.

Accommodation

Participants will stay at the university dormitory in a shared room and with shared rest rooms. There is a common room. Bedding is provided. Volunteer will receive a budget for food. Breakfast and dinner will be at the university canteen while lunch will be at the working place.

Volunteer Tasks

The volunteer will support the museum as interpreter and support specialist. Primary Responsibilities include:

  • English Narration and Translation: Volunteers will be trained to serve as English narrators for foreign visitors, providing clear and accurate translations of the museum’s encyclopedic materials into English or their native language as needed.
  • Event Support and Coordination: Volunteers will assist the museum staff in planning, organising, and executing local events, contributing to community engagement and cultural outreach.
  • Antique Preservation: Volunteers will support the maintenance and repair of antiques in the museum’s collection, aiding in conservation efforts.
  • English Language Instruction: Volunteers may have the opportunity to teach English to museum staff, enhancing staff communication with international visitors.

Volunteer Requirements

  • Fluent in English
  • Show interest in intercultural communication
  • Like to act as a visitor’s guide and share information about the artefacts the museum exhibits
