Brief description and main aims

Voice of Youth Tanzania (VOYOTA) is a non-governmental and not-for-profit organization founded in 2012 as a street movement known as Talanta Mtaani (Movement for Street Notorious Talents). The movement was initiated with a sole purpose of inspiring and motivating underserved youth to unlock their potentials. Through capacity building programs, youth were trained and empowered to utilize their talents for better. Due to its major impact, in 2017, Talanta Mtaani was transformed from operating as a street movement to a full registered organization which is now known as “Voice of Youth Tanzania – VOYOTA”.

VOYOTA is a youth-led based organization located at Usa- River in Arusha Tanzania. The organization is dedicated to improve people’s lives, particularly under resourced youth.

 
 

Main Activities

The organization’s mission is to support young people's efforts by promoting social well-being through research, vocational trainings, economic empowerment, awareness raising, networking and advocacy.

To ensure that VOYOTA accomplishes its mission, it works in three following programs:

  • TALANTA MTAANI, is a platform for young artistes who are talented but lack support to showcase their potential and meet their fans through open mic sessions
  • Sexual Reproductive Health & Rights (SRHR), is a program aimed at promoting sexual and reproductive health and rights of youth in particular girls and young women
  • Youth for Change (Y4C), is a platform whereby youth meet and discuss issues relating to their daily life – lifestyle
Moreover, VOYOTA is running two big campaigns/projects in collaboration with other development partners in Arusha.
  • 'SAUTI YA BINTI’, which means a girl’s voices, has a specific objective to support girl's education.
  • CLIMATE JUSTICE focuses on planting trees around the city and cleaning environment for safe space
Nonetheless, VOYOTA is running two big campaigns/projects in collaboration with other development partners in Arusha; i.‘SAUTI YA BINTIwhich means a girl’s voicesits specific objective to unlock school child girls’ potential. ii.CLIMATE JUSTICE that focus on planting trees around the city and cleaning environment for safe space.

Volunteer tasks

Volunteers can support on the following activities: 

  • Assisting the local volunteers in their outreach program, such as in teaching sexual reproductive health & life skills in and outside the school
  • Supporting the organization with capacity building plans, and market strategy
  • Fundraising and resource mobilization
  • Organizing community events, such as a seminars, forums etc.
  • Teaching English language for kids and young people in local community

 

Volunteer requirements / Skills

This project is suitable for volunteers who:

  • Are at least 18 years of age at the time of arrival
  • Have a good knowledge of spoken and written English
  • Are willing to work with young people in the streets who don’t know English very well
  • Are flexible in adopting cultural differences and working on them
  • Have professional experience either from project management or from the NGO field

Location

Arusha is approximately 12 hours by bus from Dar es Salaam or 1 hours by flight. Arusha is located in the Northern of Tanzania, very close to all the main National Parks (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire and Lake Manyara). The climate is much colder than Dar es Salaam; the city is small, but always full of tourists as all Safaris start from Arusha. There are plenty of western restaurants and cafes. Kilimanjaro, the tallest mountain in Africa, is also easily accessible from Arusha..

Duration

4 weeks to 6 months

Hosting Situation (Board and Lodging)

Volunteers will stay with host families. The host families provide 3 meals a day. Depending on the location of the host family, volunteers will walk or take a bus to the project.

More Information

Volunteers  will  be  using  Dar  es  Salaam airport (Julius Nyerere International Airport, JINIA) and we  will arrange the trip to Arusha. Volunteers will need to pay for their travel from Dar es Salaam to Arusha  by bus/flight, and two nights in a hotel in Dar es Salaam before departure.
