Brief description and main aims

The Martin Farm, Bangalore is a working farm. We are open exclusively for children to learn about farming, conservation, ecology, wildlife and related topics. The farm is set-up and managed as a natural eco-system showing that man can live sustainably in nature without destroying it. We have all the common farm animals, about 31 wild species of birds and smaller wildlife at the farm such as mongoose, wild hare and more. There is a lot of trees and wild life at the farm.
 
Our programs include a petting zoo concept, conservation workshops, government school farming programs, community waste management, a community farming junior entrepreneur program, animal assisted therapy and more. All of our programs are experiential learning programs.
 
We work with children of all ages from toddlers to teenagers. Our work extends to schools for differently-abled children including orphanages, government schools and other NGO specialised in this field. We have about 5 staff members in our team in varying capacities including assisting with facilitating our programs, farm maintenance, admin work, animal care, ect.

Volunteer tasks

Level 1
  • Learn the basics of day to day tasks at the farm
  • Learn our agricultural method
  • Learn to identify different food producing plants grown at the farm
  • Learn how to harvest various plant seeds
  • Learn to take cuttings, germinate different types of plants
  • Begin understanding natural eco-systems and conservation
  • Assist with maintenance work including cleaning, building, repairs etc.
Level 2
  • Independently manage animal care and feeding routines
  • Assist with animal medical care and daily grooming
  • Assist with enclosure enrichment
  • Independently get agricultural plots for planting ready
  • Independently harvest seeds, manage the germination process
  • Assist with programs / events conducted at the farm
  • Assist with maintenance work including cleaning, building, repairs etc.
Level 3
  • Independently manage / execute all aspects of level 2
  • Independently facilitate the farm tour for children.
  • Assist with administration tasks, accounting, planning
  • Assist with our Junior Entrepreneur and Community Farming Program (JECP)
  • Assist with our gardening program in government schools (GSGP)
  • Mentor volunteers in level 1 and 2
Level 4
  • Independently manage / execute all aspects of level 3
  • Independently be able to facilitate the first 2 months of JECP
  • Independently be able to facilitate the first 3 months of GSGP
  • Assist with agriculture and multi-cropping planning
  • Mentor volunteers in level 2 and 3.
  • Lead a volunteer team to plan and execute more efficient farming methods
 

Volunteer requirements / Skills

The volunteer should:
  • be proficient in English
  • be hardworking
  • love the outdoors
  • be older than 18 
  • be interested in conservation, agriculture, botany and alternate education.

Location

We are located in a village called Chikkabellandur. The Martin family have owned and run the farm for the past 35 years. The village has now grown but still retains its essential flavour of a close knit neighbourhood. The farm is tucked away from the hustle of urbanisation. The community around the farm are primarily locals who speak only Kannada as well as migrant worker residents.

Minimum: 4 weeks

Maximum: up to one year

Hosting Situation (Board and Lodging)

The volunteer will live in the project´s guest house.

More Information

We work, eat and live together supporting each other for the management of the farm and our community. We do not allow drinking and smoking on the premises and are a zero-waste area and everyone is expected to support this while ensuring water conservation and green living.
