Brief description and main aims

 
Missionaries of the Poor is a small community run by a religious congregation of missionaries, which aims to give a free and joyful service to the local needy children, youths and elderly people residing in the community. It is founded and run by a Catholic church. Most of the residents of this area are refugees from Congo, Somalia, Rwanda and abandoned children and/or elderly people.

Main Activities

  • MOP offers services to the poor, e.g visit slums and gives scholastic materials for children, provides basic needs for families, physical and psychological support
  • MOP takes care of orphans and abandoned children by giving them shelter, food and medical support. The community has housing for all its residents.
  • MOP also supports children with disabilities 
  • Some of the brothers at MOP are doctors, nurses e.t.c so they visit people in nearby communities and offer free medical help
  • MOP takes care of elderly people and provides housing for them

Volunteer tasks

Some of the volunteer's tasks include:

  • Feeding children, some may be handicapped or have special needs
  • Making sure the residential and compound area is maintained clean
  • Helping out with the cooking
  • Playing with the children
  • Being with the children during their free time

Volunteer requirements / Skills

The volunteer should:

  • Be ready to integrate with the residents at the project
  • Have motivation and love for children, some of whom are handicapped or with special needs
  • Have some knowledge of small touch therapy (not mandatory)
  • Be able to speak English and also be ready to learn new languages
  • Be able to adapt easily to new environments especially to ones that are out of their comfort zone
  • Be open-minded, always able to express their feelings good or bad
  • Like to interact with people
  • Be creative

Location

The project is located in the neighbouring slums of Kampala in a place called Kisenyi.
