Brief description and main aims

CHAKUWAMA is an orphanage that hosts children who lost their parents or were abandoned in the streets. It provides them with shelter, clothes, health and education at government schools. The orphanage is home to more than 50 children and young people from the age of 2 to 18, but its objective is to expand and be able to host more kids. The project started in 1998 with 5 children and has continued to grow over the years.

Main Activities

Its mission is to make sure disadvantaged children can live a better life. The staff is composed by 12 people who receive an allowance. CHAKUWAMA has a few sources of funding, including companies, such as Vodacom and private donors, however the amount of funds they receive is limited.

Volunteer tasks

Volunteers are welcome to support the orphanage in all areas, depending on their interests and skills, including:

  • Childcare
  • Teach English for children and youth 
  • Organizing life skills session for young adolescents
  • Helping to prepare a meal
  • Playing with the kids
  • Supporting the management with accounts and project development

Volunteer requirements / Skills

This project is for both skilled and unskilled volunteers who:

  • Are at least 18 years of age at the time of arrival
  • Have a good knowledge of spoken and written English
  • Enjoy spending time with children and youth

Location

They  have  two  branches  in  Dar  es  Salaam; the oldest  one  found  at Sinza,  a  very  lively  area,  with plenty of bars and clubs. Young Tanzanians love to go out in this area during the weekend. The second one found at Mbezi outside of the city but not at the village. 

Duration

4 weeks to 1 year

Hosting Situation (Board and Lodging)

Volunteers will stay with host families. The host families provide 2 meals a day, while lunch is provided by the project. Depending on the location of the host family, volunteers will walk or take a bus to the project.

  • The project is located near to Milimani City Mall, one of the biggest malls in Dar es Salaam, and is also close to University of Dar es Salaam and Mwenge handcrafts market
