Brief description and main aims

This is a project that seeks to help children and young people in vulnerable situations (live and work in streets) in different areas so that they can have all the tools to succeed in their lives.
 
This organization is managed by the Salesians, is very catholic and conservative. It works in vulnerable sectors of the city and with more than 150 children/young people.  

Main Activities

The project works in different areas:
 
  • “La Marin” and “Pisulí” are considered a safe place for some young  people who need support  in  homework  and  certain  activities.
  • “Mi  Caleta” focuses on helping young people who need a home due to violence or poverty
  • “Granja Don Juan Bosco de Ambato” is a farm on the outskirts of the city where they focus on  improving the living conditions of the youth by providing support in education, food and shelter
  • “Golaso” seeks to support the youth in their  after school  activities and to promote sports in  different  championships  of  soccer, basketball, volleyball, etc.
  • “UESPA” is an educational unit that provides the opportunity  for  children and youth  to  access  education, as well as snacks and food

Volunteer tasks

  • help with homework
  • support and lead all of the activities and play with the children
  • help to maintain order in the project
  • serve an important role as a mentor for the children and young people
  • be part of the “Salesianos” team: cleaning, sometimes office work, doing sports and being part of everyday life

Volunteer requirements / Skills

The volunteer needs/should:
  • have patience
  • like to spend time with children and teenagers
  • be able to confront difficult situations
  • have basic Spanish skills 
  • be motivated and dedicated
  • be able to work in recreational activities and in sports
  • be a very open-minded and flexible person

Location

1 in Quito North, 4 in Quito South and 1 in Ambato city (3 hours from Quito).

Hosting Situation (Board and Lodging)

The volunteer will live with a host family.
