Brief description and main aims

National  private  schools  in  Indonesia  have  put  Mandarin  in  their  curriculum.  In  national  private  school, Mandarin  is  taught  starting  on  kindergarten  level.  Mandarin  language  and  culture  project  is  a combination between  high  schools  and  university including formal  and  non-formal  Mandarin  teaching and entertainment  activities  for  students.

One  of  them  is  Terang  Bangsa  school.  It  is  an educational  institution under church foundation. Terang Bangsa School Foundation host students from kindergarten until academy level. Terang Bangsa School started to introduce their elementary students with Mandarin language as secondary subject. They learn Mandarin once in a week for 2 hours. Mandarin language is being taught until senior high school level. The school days are from Monday until Saturday, 7 am –2 pm.

Beside the regular school  hour,  the  students  are  given  flexibility  to  choose  their  extracurricular  activities,  such  as  art,  sport, community  service,  science  or  IT.  The  students  in  Terang  Bangsa  Foundation  actively  help  poor  people  in Semarang.  They  regularly  conduct  afternoon  educational  activities  in  poor  areas.  They  even  build a children  center  in  one  of  the  areas.  At  the  university  level,  the  project  site  will  be  located  at  UNSOED university. 

Volunteer tasks

  • Assist local Mandarin teacher
  • Contribute to the organization of non-formal workshops
  • Organize  games  and  entertaining  activities  for  students
  • Contribute  to  other  activities  the school may organize 

Volunteer requirements / Skills

A native Mandarin speaker or fluent in Mandarin is preferred. The volunteer should be open-minded, mature, respectful of local customs, tolerant, creative, flexible, patient, confident and independent. The volunteer should also be willing to accept basic living conditions in the project site.

The volunteer should have never been found guilty in a criminal case. It is strictly prohibited to possess narcotics, marijuana, opium, stimulants or other drugs. The volunteer should not have piercings on the face and no visible tattoos. A common hairstyle (not colourful, dreadlocks) is requested. Flexible vegetarians are welcomed but unfortunately, we are not able to host strict vegetarians (vegan).

Location

These projects are located in Central Java

The terminal of arrival: Semarang Airport, railway station (Volunteer is NOT ALLOWED to buy a flight ticket before getting the visa and confirmation from the host organization).

Hosting Situation (Board and Lodging)

The accommodation and food will be provided by the host project. The volunteer will stay with a local host family or at a dormitory (to be confirmed). The volunteer  may  have  an own  room or  share the  room  and  other  facilities  with  host  family  members. Facilities are simple and Indonesian style (no hot water, no washing machine).
