Brief description and main aims

Japanese language and culture has entered Indonesian education curriculum in the recent years including formal  and  non-formal  teaching, interactive  learning  activities and introducing Japanese culture and art. In high school, the students learn basic Japanese language skills, such as greeting, vocabulary and constructing simple sentences. Besides that, they also learn about its culture. Sometimes, the school makes Japanese culture festival in the end of the year.

At the university level, it has become major of studies. Student, who is under language department, is also given option to learn Japanese language and culture as their minor studies. This language is getting famous and widely taught in many Indonesian schools.

The schools and universities support the students to become confident and mature by interacting  with  Japanese  volunteers  in  order  to  get  better  understanding  about  different  culture  as  well  as knowing  Japanese better. 

Volunteer tasks

  • Organize and assist local Japanese teacher
  • Contribute to the organization of non-formal work shops
  • Organize games and entertaining activities for students
  • Contribute to other activities the school may punctually organize 

Volunteer requirements / Skills

A native Japanese speaker or fluent in Japanese is preferred. The volunteer should be open-minded, mature, respectful of local customs, tolerant, creative, flexible, patient, confident and independent. The volunteer should also be willing to accept basic living conditions in the project site.

The volunteer should have never been found guilty in a criminal case. It is strictly prohibited to possess narcotics, marijuana, opium, stimulants or other drugs. The volunteer should not have piercings on the face and no visible tattoos. A common hairstyle (not colourful, dreadlocks) is requested. Flexible vegetarians are welcomed but unfortunately, we are not able to host strict vegetarians (vegan).

Location

These projects are located in Java Island

The terminal of arrival: Semarang Airport, railway station (Volunteer is NOT ALLOWED to buy a flight ticket before getting the visa and confirmation from the host organization).

Hosting Situation (Board and Lodging)

The  accommodation  and  food  will  be  provided  by  a  local  host  family  or  the volunteer will stay at a dormitory (to  be  confirmed).  The volunteer  may  have an own  room or  share it  and other  facilities  with  other  host  family  members. Facilities are simple and Indonesian style (no hot water, no washing machine).
