Brief description and main aims

The Casa de Acogida "Sor Maria Catalina" is a non-profit institution dedicated to providing 
medical, social, psychological and spiritual care to patients with advanced and irreversible 
disease (with palliative treatment), of all ages, of any origin and belief of faith, improving 
their quality of life, also providing support to their relatives in a careful and freeway.
The institution has an interdisciplinary team of volunteer professionals in different areas.
The center receives and welcomes patients from any region of Bolivia. They have capacity for 
22 people, for 16 seniors and 6 children.

Cultural Exposure

Location: Located in the northern part of the city of Sucre.
Patients with terminal illnesses, of all ages who are at the end of their lives.

Main Activities

Palliative care is one of the main activities and tasks carried out in the Shelter, which 
constitutes an approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their relatives, when 
they face problems inherent to a potentially fatal disease.
Palliative care activities prevent and alleviate suffering through the early identification, 
evaluation and correct treatment of pain and other problems; physical, psychosocial and 
spiritual problems.
 

Volunteer tasks

The volunteer helps with daily tasks, such as caring for and keeping the patients company, 
participating in scheduled activities, accompanying patients to the hospital for specific 
studies, that is, the volunteer does accompanying tasks for the patient, assisting the nurses 
or volunteers in different areas.
Ideas or proposals for the benefit of patients are considered occupational activities, such as 
gardening and others that help a lot so that the patient can still move independently.

Volunteer requirements / Skills

The Volunteer must be very spontaneous, creative, patient, attentive, showing a lot of 
affection and interest towards patients and their families, making them feel how important 
they are to us. The volunteer must have the ability to see the reality in which each patient 
and his family lives, because work with terminally ill patients is very special.
The motivation, love and interest shown by each Volunteer are very important.
It would help a lot if the volunteer speaks a little Spanish and also if they have some 
knowledge about health. Volunteers can be men or women.
Likewise, the Volunteer during his stay in the institution will be able to attend training 
workshops on palliative care and how to care for people with terminal illnesses.
