Tránsito Amaguaña (ECU-136)

Type: Education: Primary school, Human Rights: Indigenous Rights - Country: Ecuador

Brief description and main aims

The project exists with the purpose of giving education to the children. Great emphasis is put onto the preservation of the indigenous culture. Therefore, the students also have classes in Quichua and Music.
The project also aims to give the children a chance to play, have fun, and truly be kids, as often when the school day ends they must work in the market or return to an unstable home.

Cultural Exposure

The school is located on the grounds of the Mercado Mayorista, a very busy market mainly for wholesalers. The people working in the market are mostly indigenous and come from low socio-economic backgrounds.

Main Activities

The project works as a bilingual school for children whose parents do not have the resources to send them to a school outside the market, where most of them work.

Volunteer tasks

The volunteer would have to work from 7am to 1pm, Mondays to Fridays. He/she would mostly help the teachers at the school and play with the children during the breaks.

Volunteer requirements / Skills

The volunteer will need creativity, patience, flexibility, sense of responsibility and the ability to work independently.
The volunteer would also need to be open-minded, as many of the children in the school cannot do tasks such as everyday homework, as they must work in the market with their parents.
