KUMAH FARMS COMPLEX (GHA-83)

Brief description and main aims
Mr. Martin Kwaku Kumah, the owner and managing director of the Kumah Farms Complex was first introduced to farming in 1972 by his grandmother during his primary education. After completing his education, he gained employment at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology as a transport officer. Then he decided to continue his agricultural pursuit along with his duties at the university.
He acquired a farm at Anwomaso and started with poultry, small game, and crop farming. In 1988, he was adjudged the best farmer in the Kumasi metropolis. Due to this honor and continued service to the community, the Anwomaso Chief enstooled him as the Nkosohene (development chief) of Anwomaso and bestowed the stool
name Nana Kwaku Siaw in January 2008.
In 2001 he resigned from his job at the university to go into full-time farming. He has since gained many awards and recognition for his impact in the Agricultural Sector.

Main Activities
Some of the services provided on the farm are:
• Small Game (grasscutter, guinea, pigs, antelopes, porcupines, rats, tortoise, and snails)
• Livestock farming (pig farming, goat and sheep rearing, layers and broilers, turkeys, ducks, and ostriches)
• Crop farming (Cassava, yam, plantain, citrus, mango, sugarcane, coconut, Avocado, maize, local leaves etc.)
• Aquaculture (catfish and tilapia)
• Apiculture
• Animal feed formulation
• Processing of farm produced into finished goods.
Each year, the farm undertakes to train an average of 30 students for their attachments. Most of the students are drawn from agricultural colleges, farm institutions, polytechnics, and public universities.

Volunteer tasksThe expected duties to be performed by volunteers include assisting the workers on the farm in the daily managerial roles. There are about four main department of the institution for which volunteers shall be rotated to work and learn. |
Volunteer requirements / Skills
• There are no specific language skills required of volunteers. Basic English language is accepted.
• There is no discrimination in gender or age. Any interested volunteer is accepted if only he/she has the passion for the project.

LocationThe site of the project is in Anwomaso-Domeabra, a suburb of the Ejisu Juabeng municipality. The town has electricity, information centre, clinic, and other social amenities. |
Hosting Situation (Board and Lodging)The farm has a hostel for students, volunteers, and other trainees. The hostel facilities have washroom, electricity, and water. There is also a restaurant in the farm therefore volunteers shall be accommodated and fed. |
