Brief description and main aims

Olango Wildlife Sanctuary is a major refueling station for approximately 40,000 migratory birds.It supports the largest concentration of migratory birds found so far in the Philippines.The Philippine Dept of Environment and Natural Resources(DENR) has been tasked to protect and manage the area. A sanctuary office has been established in the area and serves as a jump-off point for birdwatching in the reserve.The goal is to harmonize Eco-tourism and biodiversity conservation in Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary.

Main Activities

  • Eco-tourism activities, such as birdwatching, swimming, camping and sightseeing
  • Biodiversity conservation, research and development
  • Monitoring and protection of the mangrove forest and the Marine Sanctuary
  • Costal clean up

Volunteer tasks

  • Support the organization’s program, projects and activities
  • Assist the organization’s office and fieldwork which include but are not limited to the following: development of promotion a land presentation materials, conduct advocacy campaigns in schools, communities, institutions as well as organize related events, etc.
  • Assist during training /capacity building programs, community visits and other community development related work
  • Assist writing of proposals for grants/donations and other resource mobilization activities
  • Assist in maintaining the sanctuary and its facilities like cleaning life vests and swimming gears 

Volunteer requirements / Skills

  • Flexible, open-minded and a teamplayer
  • High interest or has special skills on wildlife and marine conservation
  • Keen interest (hobbies/skills/talent) on any of the following: photography, video,animation and other multi-media documentation, graphicarts, information technology and social media development and management
  • Independent and can handle limited supervision
  • Interest in presentation and communication skills

Location

The project is located in San Vicente, Lapu-lapu City.

Hosting Situation (Board and Lodging)

The volunteer will stay with a host family (expect to have a shared room with your host sister or brother).
