Un Mundo (HON-66)

Type: Human Rights: Advocacy - Country: Honduras

Brief description and main aims

Un Mundo (One World) is a non-profit international development organisation with a comprehensive and revolutionary approach to its work. Un Mundo is a movement whose mission is to promote dignity, community, and self-sufficiency while facilitating access to health care, education, and liveable wages in marginalised Honduran communities.

Un Mundo works in rural Honduran communities where extreme inequality forces most families to live on the margins of survival. Since Un Mundo’s inception, its energies have been focused in the Cangrejal River valley, located on the eastern edge of Pico Bonito National Park in Honduras.

Pico Bonito has more than 200 communities and their survival depends on the resources from this protected area. Dense population, the weaknesses of development and the application of the law and environmental policies, added up with the low-life level in the neighbouring communities, threatened the park’s valuable resources.

Main Activities

Un Mundo is carrying out three main types of projects:
  • Education and Art: links with literacy (library)
  • Health: Special Education and water & basic sanitation
  • Ways of sustainable life: Entrepreneurship (women groups)

Entrepreneurship – Microenterprise of Women
  • Work is being carried out on a research about women participation, opportunities (employment, education, health), discriminatory aspects (machismo, domestic violence, physical and sexual abuse, among others).
  • Within the research and after meeting with women focus groups, women in 4 communities are organised, who work in the planning of the creation of a microenterprise to produce pickled vegetables.
  • At the same time, women are being trained on themes such as Sexually Transmitted Infections, teenage pregnancy, self-esteem, leadership, prenatal and postnatal care, cancer, among others.
