Brief description and main aims

Mainichi-Christmas (meaning everday christmas) is day care service center for elderly people surrounded by nature so that everyone can feel comfortable and feel at home. They provide nursing and a lot of events, e.g. related to cultural exchange. They have a motto,  “getting old is natural for everyone, embrace the life they live and respect their individuality". Also, they have an activity for elementary school students from 6 to 12 years old.

Main Activities

They create peaceful and lively environment for elderly people and take care of them. They are working with many kinds of communities, providing a welcoming atmosphere for everyone. They also work with an after school program with a local elementary school.

Volunteer tasks

Working with elderly:
  • Taking care of then and visiting the patients in hospitals to assist with different recreation activities
  • Cleaning and helping with the cooking in the facility
Working with children:
  • Taking care of elementary school children (1st~6th grades) at the after school programs, cooking, playing with them and supporting them with different activities 
There are also many events, such as festivals hosted by volunteers, cultural exchange events, and  Christmas parties. Volunteers will have many opportunities for international cultural exchange.

Volunteer requirements / Skills

  • Japanese language skills (they welcome anybody who is willing to learn Japanese)
  • No alcohol (except for parties which are of voluntary participation)
  • No smoking
  • Being punctual
  • Being tolerant and answering questions kindly even though they may ask same questions several times
  • Please bring something from your own country that you can use to introduce yourself

Location

Nikko, Tochigi. Nikko is one of the most famous touristic places, surrounded by many temples, shrines and nature. 

Hosting Situation (Board and Lodging)

Volunteers will be accommodated in the project, and are responsible for cooking for themselves.
