Velokhaya Life Cycling Academy (ZAF-17)

Type: Socially Excluded Groups: Minorities - Country: South Africa

Brief description and main aims

At Velokhaya we use cycling to involve children, living in marginalised communities, in a positive after-school activity which builds up their self-esteem, keeps them off the streets and away from the social ills prevalent in their communities, such as gangsterism,
crime and substance abuse.

Our aim is to use cycling to create champions on and off the bike. Sports give young children the opportunities and skills, such as commitment, dedication, and  teamwork, they need to become successful.

Sports also teach children about resilience and perseverance, it gives them the opportunity to become physically and emotionally stronger. Also, it teaches them to strive for excellence , to be gracious in victory and to persevere in defeat.

Main Activities

Velokhaya’s cycling-based programmes target children from school-going age to those in their early 20s (predominantly children between the ages of 9-18). Both our BMX and road cycling programmes incorporate a cycle/road safety competent.

The BMX cycling programme aims to encourage mass participation in the sport in a safe, controlled environment while our road cycling programmes allow for participation in the sport of cycling
