Brief description and main aims

The project “Service of Integrated Education of Sensorial Deficients” (Le Service d’Education Intégrée des Déficients Sensoriels: le SEIDS) is initiated to solve the problem of socio educative integration of children stricken by sensorial incapacity (sight, learning). It allows and supports high school education for blind students in various cities/towns in Togo: Lomé, Kara, Kpalimé and Sokodé.
 
SEIDS collaborates with official or private schools in the towns where it is established. These schools lead to the high school diploma, the “Baccalauréat”. The blind students learn together with non-blind students in the same class. Therefore, the members of SEIDS help to generate a good integration of the blind students into the classes and support their learning by ameliorating their learning conditions.
In Kpalimé, for example, there is a special primary school for blind students, but after finishing primary school, there is no special high school for blind students.

Main Activities

With main aims to accompany the sensorial deficient children in educative domain, rehabilitate people who bear sensorial deficiency during their profession and adopt a policy of integration of this class through institutional education, volunteer will help in the project to translate the written exams and tests of the students from Braille into Latin letters.
 
This is important, because the teachers do not know the Braille alphabet. After translating, the exam papers are given to the teachers for the correction.
 
In addition to that, the exercises of exams and tests are transformed into Braille with the help of a computer program and a special printer. The prints consist the exercises in Braille and are given to the students on the exam day.

Volunteer tasks

Volunteers take an active part in pedagogic supervision which is daily done by the teachers.
 
The tasks of volunteers in the project are therefore the transformation of exercises into Braille and the translation of written exams.
 
Volunteers will help transcribe the examination papers, didactic documents, the matrix in Braille; they will rehear and explain the lessons that the disabled have received.
 
In addition, the volunteers visit the students at home several times a week to repeat the lessons and assist with questions and difficulties. But most of the time, the volunteer works on the computer or translates Braille writing.
 
Therefore, the volunteer should also be very patient and it should not be a problem to have the same tasks every day and to work on the computer a lot.

Volunteer requirements / Skills

The tasks of volunteers do not require specific professional competences. In this project, the volunteer should be sensitive and open-minded.The volunteer should be open to learn the Braille alphabet, interested in working with blind students and willing to help and support the students in their learning process. This means that the volunteer is also willing to give a lot of time to help the students with the lessons at home and to repeat the lessons. In addition, the volunteer should be independent and creative. Experiences in working with sensorial handicapped persons will be helpful but it is also possible to do the work without previous experience.

“Le Service d’Education Intégrée des Déficients Sensoriels” is located in Kpalime at Kpegolonou section.

Hosting Situation (Board and Lodging)

The volunteer will be living with a host family.
