Brief description and main aims

Fundación Horizontes al Futuro is a rehabilitation home-centre with the main aim of re-educating, qualifying and re-immersing male children and youth from and in the streets and in social risk, into their families and society. In the home-centre, children and youth live in an atmosphere of dialogue, respect and freedom, discovering other constructive alternatives, being accountable of their own lives and the upkeep of the home-centre, fostering positive values and attitudes, meaning, providing them a comprehensive training.

Main Activities

The home-centre is managed as a boarding school system in which children and youth live within the home-centre, teaching them how to take care of themselves, such as personal hygiene, doing laundry, house chores, etc. All children and youth attend school and high school, and the staff members help them with tutoring lessons and homework. The home-centre also offers vocational training with different workshops such as carpentry, tailoring, computers and welding, in which also people from the community can participate.

Volunteer tasks

The activities in which the volunteers will be involved depend in the tasks of her/his preference and/or knowledge and the necessities of the home-centre at that time.

The volunteer can:
  • help the staff members in educating the children and youth on the importance of having good habits and manners
  • help the children and youth with their studies such as homework
  • help take the children and youth to school and high school
  • organise and lead different sports and leisure activities with the children and youth
  • assist the instructors in the different vocational training workshops
  • spend time with the children and youth. 
The volunteer can propose new ideas for classes, workshops, activities.

Volunteer requirements / Skills

The volunteer should: 
  • be at least 18 years old.
  • have self-confidence and a firm character
  • be respectful and tolerant to religious beliefs (the home-centre was founded by a Catholic priest.)
Fluency in Spanish is preferred but a fair level of Spanish is acceptable.
 
No particular study is required though skills and knowledge to develop the vocational training workshops is greatly appreciated (carpentry, tailoring, computers and welding).
 

 

Location

The project is located in Comayagua, Comayagua.

Hosting Situation (Board and Lodging)

The volunteer will live at the project or with a host family.

More Information

The project is available to start in August and February every year for 6-12 months.
