Brief description and main aims

Escuela Taller para Sordos “Amor en Acción” is a non-profit and non-governmental organisation that offers general education mainly to deaf children and youth between the ages of 8-26. Additionally to the deaf children and youth, some children are able to hear well and can talk fluently, and there is a ‘special class’ for children with mental disabilities.

Main Activities

The main activities of the school are to provide:

• Kindergarten, primary and secondary education to deaf children and youth, emphasising the learning of sign language.
• Christian biblical education to deaf children and youth.
• Health and dental services to deaf children and youth.
• Training in different technical areas through vocational classes and workshops such as carpentry, beauty parlour techniques, and sewing.

Volunteer tasks

The volunteer can help in any of the areas of the school, for example, assisting the teachers in the different classes, assisting in the vocational classes and workshops, do a lot of creative tasks such as decorating, drawing and painting.

Most of the staff members are very religious (mainly Evangelic) and incorporate Christian beliefs into the classes.

Volunteer requirements / Skills

• be at least 18 years old..
• have at least a basic level (A1) of Spanish proficiency.
• demonstrate patience and tolerance
• be highly motivated to learn sign language (Lengua de Señas Hondureña – LESHO)

Location

The project is located in Tegucigalpa, Francisco Morazán.

Hosting Situation (Board and Lodging)

The volunteer will live with a host family.
