The St. Theresa Opportunity Center was founded by Rev. Brendan O`Connell, MM in 1988 and Sister Joan McCarthy, SP was the first director of the center. It is the first day care center, especially for people with disabilities in Tainan City.
The aims of the project are:
Protect and respect the dignity and privacy of people with disabilities.
Educate and encourage people with a disability.
Assist people with disabilities in developing their full potential.
Help people with disabilities be included in the community.
Pre-school and schooling special education
Community-based group home
Help in rehabilitation class as a co-assistance of the preschool education.
Teach some handicrafts in classes supported with professional staff
Help with the day-to-day tasks in the center and some other more activities.
Help doing some administration work or keeping the environment clean.
Volunteer requirements / Skills
Be interested in working with mentally disabled children.
Be positive, active and patient.
The St. Theresa Opportunity Centre is situated at the central of YuJing Township, southern Taiwan.
From the project to the nearest train station – ShanHua Station, is about 50 minutes by bus. From ShanHua station to Tainan City station is about 25 minutes by local train.
From Tainan city to Kaohsiung city is around 45 km and 317km to Taipei City. The public transportation from Tainan city to Kaohsiung or Taipei city connection are good, you can easily take a bus, train or high speed rail to any city in Taiwan.
Hosting Situation (Board and Lodging)
The volunteer will stay with the host family or project dormitory, subject to project’s arrangement.
