Brief description and main aims

"ICAL (Instituto Colombiano de la Audición y el Lenguaje)" is a school centre for children approximately 250 children between the age of 2 and 23, promoting education and rehabilitation of deaf and hearing impaired children and also children with various disabilities as well as hearing-healthy children.  Most of the pupils come from socially deprived families. The main aim is to help the children develop cognitive, communicational, moral and social skills, so that they can be self-confident members of their community.

Main Activities

Child education in normal academic subjects, with additional teaching of health and foreign languages, as well as rehabilitation sessions.

Volunteer tasks

• Supporting and helping the teachers
• Substituting ill teachers
• Especially taking care of one child
• Assisting children from nursery or pre- kindergarten level to adolescents (Subjects can be sports and pedagogical learning games)
• They also could support the administrative office

Volunteer requirements / Skills

• Willingness to work with deaf children
• Must be open-minded, sociable, patient, tolerant and creative
• Must be willing to attend sign language classes
• Because of the second language (sign language) a basic level of Spanish is preferable

Location

The project is located in Chía, a small town located in the north of Bogotá, an one hour and half bus ride away from the capital. It has almost 200.000 habitants. The volunteer could live in Bogotá.

Hosting Situation (Board and Lodging)

The volunteer will live with a host family.
