Centro de Cuidados São João Calábria is a philanthropic institution that has been, for over 40 years, investing in the needy children and teenagers of our society by providing them education and human formation based on the Christian values. At the project, the children receive feeding, scholar assistance and basic care.

Its main wok is aimed at the needy families within the community, mostly living in a situation of extreme poverty. Besides offering assistance and orientation to the parents, it also offers complementary education to on average 70 children from 2 to 14 years old – most of the kids either study during the morning and attend the project in the afternoon or vice versa.

The volunteers will be asked to assist in one of the areas below:
- Recreational activities
- Dance, computer, art and handcraft workshops
- Help out in the administrative service
- Sports
The volunteer’s role will also be to assist the educators in the usual activities of the project. Volunteer is expected to work from 20 to 25 hours per week.

To be open minded; to have high motivation and commitment; to be pro-active and dynamic; to be creative, being able to develop new activities, sometimes with limited resources, to have artistic, pedagogical or sport abilities; to create and to develop his/her own project according to the interests and skills.

The project is located in Porto Alegre, which is the capital of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, the southern most state of Brazil. The city has a population of 1.500.000 inhabitants approximately, being very big and urbanized. The neighborhood - Nonoai - has approximately 32.222 inhabitants and it’s about 30 minutes away from the city center by bus.

In Brazilian host families. Provided by the host family.

- All participants must arrive in Brazil between August 15th and 17th, no other starting date will be accepted. The latest date to finish the programme is October 17th.
- All participants must have health insurance (not covered by ABIC)
- All participants must inform themselves about any vaccination that might be needed to enter the country.
- The exchange participants must bring warm clothes, since the weather here gets quite chilly during the winter.
