|Brief description and main aims|
Associação Cristã de Moços (ACM) Vila Restinga is a Brazilian branch of the YMCA, a world-wide Organization that offers different programs in response to local community needs.
In Brazil, ACM offers a broad range of programs such as sports, child care, overnight camping, conference centers and educational activities as methods of promoting positive values.
The project is placed in a very poor district and the objective is the social insertion of children and younger under risk situation through sports and different activities.
The project is quite large and has a very good structure, receiving more than 400 children from 6 to 16 years old from the Restinga neighborhood. The children who study at school during the morning, stay in the project during the afternoon and vice versa.
The children from 6 to 12 years old are attended a program called “Sport Clube Cidadão“. Different activities are realized for the children, such as recreational activities, activities which help the mental and physical development, art workshops, sport, cooking workshops etc.
For the older children, from 13 to 16 years old, there’s a program called „Projeto Juventude“ and they can choose the activities in which they participate: normally they like cinema and video, capoeria, percussions, tennis, basket, dance, soccer, rugby etc.
The volunteer will help the educators during the normal recreational and leisure activities organized in the project, such as assistance in the library, games, visit outside the community, computer lesson, cooking etc. After about two months (a period of adaptation and observation), the volunteers will be also asked to create some workshops in one of the areas:
- Dance or theatre.
- Arts (manual work, handcraft, painting, drawing etc.)
- Pedagogical support, sports and games, English classes.
|Volunteer requirements / Skills|
To be patient, open minded, pro-active and dynamic. To have high motivation and commitment in working with problematic children. To create and to develop his/her own project according to the interests, needs and skills.
Important: To be creative, have artistic skills (work with arts, handcrafts etc.), have musical skills (theatre, dance etc.) or to have pedagogical and sport abilities (work with sports and create games, playing activities etc.).
The project is placed in a poor and isolated district called Restinga. The project is known in Porto Alegre as the Dunga project, because of the support of the famous football player.
|Hosting Situation (Board & Lodging)|
The volunteer will be living with a family that will provide lodge and board.
