Brief description and main aims

Escuela Urbana Mixta Dr. Modesto Rodas Alvarado (Mixed Urban School Dr. Modesto Rodas Alvarado) is a public school, which currently has approximately 420 pupils, from 6 to 13 years old. The school was named after a former Honduran president of the Liberal political party. The school provides the children of the rural community of Taulabé with the basic education they need for their lives. Many of the students continue their education when graduating from the school and go to college.

The school's main objectives are: provide Taulabé's children the basic education they need for their lives, help the rural development of the community Taulabé, and this way also helping in the development of the country as a whole.

Main Activities

The schools main activities are: teach the basic subjects to different grades composed of children in varied age ranges, promote the importance of education in the community Taulabé, and work in the school's maintenance.

Volunteer tasks

- Teach English or music lessons to the various grades of students (this is the main activity the volunteer does),
- assist the other teachers in their lessons. There is the possibility to support the Physical Education's teacher, imparted once a day every week,
- there is the opportunity to teach music and arts to the students and make after-school programs, depending on the volunteer's skills,
- the volunteer can perform many artistic activities within the various events that Taulabé (as a community) organizes.

Volunteer requirements / Skills

Age: Older than 18.
Gender: Indifferent.
Languages: Spanish and English.
Studies: Volunteers with studies in the educational sector, or child-care volunteering background of any kind, will be preferred.
Abilities and Attitudes: The volunteer should be friendly, open-minded, creative, very patient, and possess the ability to work with children.
Religion: Indifferent.
