Brief description and main aims

 

Fundación Hondureña para el Niño con Cáncer, FUHNICER (Honduran Foundation for the Child with Cancer) is a non-political and non-profit organization, that works only and mainly for the less economically privileged children that are been treated for cancer in the Hospital Escuela in the city of Tegucigalpa and other hospitals throughout the country.
The main aim of FUHNICER is to offer a free oncology treatment to more than 3.000 children of families with low economical resources.
FUHNICER's mission is to save lives of children with cancer.

Main Activities

Some of the main activities of FUHNICER are to provide:
- Oncology medicines and some of support when the hospital cannot provide or does not have in existence.
- Specialized laboratory exams.
- Foreign trips in case of requiring more advanced and non-existing treatments in the country.
- National transport for the children and their parents.
- Specialist doctors, a psychologist, archives, nurses and social worker.
- Support to the parents with monthly meetings to share experiences that benefit the oncology treatment of their children.
- Recreational and educative activities for the children.
- Acquisition and repair of medical equipment.
- To create awareness in the population on the necessity to collect funds to offer an opportunity of life to the children with cancer.
- To make educative campaigns on the infant cancer.

Volunteer tasks

The volunteer will work in the "Hospital Escuela", which is one of the main public and teaching hospitals where most of the medicine students of the national public university perform their medical internships.
Some of the tasks a volunteer may perform in FUHNICER are: share time, play with and help the children in their needs. organize activities (games, handicrafts, readings), and help at the office in the hospital (searching information, translating documents).

Age: Older than 18.
Gender: Indifferent.
Languages: Indifferent.
Studies: Indifferent.
Abilities and Attitudes: Interest and lots of patience in working with children, be mature and responsible, skills that you can share and teach to the children, take initiative, be able to deal with tough situations such as death or very ill children and to be always informed of the types of infections or diseases that will be around yourself.
Religion: Indifferent.
