Brief description and main aims

MWANDILIWA is an orphanage that hosts children who have lost their parents or were abandoned in the street. The centre provides them with shelter, clothes, health and education at government schools. The orphanage is home to 60 children from the age of 2 to 18 years; most of them are brought in by a social welfare officer.

The orphanage currently runs a pre-school program, but the founders are planning to build a primary and secondary schools as they recognize the importance of investing in education.

The project started in 2002 with 3 children, but it has continued to grow over the years. It was registered as an NGO in 2006 under the Ministry responsible for community development.

Main Activities

MWANDILIWA's mission is to make sure disadvantaged children can live a better life and can receive the fundamental education. Its objective is to continue to expand and to build a primary and secondary schools. 

The staff comprises of 11 people who receive an allowance.

MWANDILIWA doesn’t have specific sources of funding; although some occasional private donors have financed the project (for example a private donor sponsored the construction of the kitchen).

Volunteer tasks

Volunteers are welcome to support the orphanage in all areas, depending on their interests and skills, including:

  • Childcare
  • Teaching at the pre-school
  • Teaching English for both children and staff
  • Helping with the preparation of the meals
  • Playing sports and organising games with the children (Maybe even coach a football team)
  • Supporting the management with accounts and project development
  • Conducting a soft skills program, such as sexual & reproductive health and life skills

Daily tasks are flexible. A typical day at MWANDILIWA starts in the morning, when volunteers and staff can teach at the nursery. In the afternoon, volunteers can either play with the orphans or help them with their homework.

Volunteer requirements / Skills

This project is suitable for volunteers who:

  • Are at least 18 years of age at the time of arrival
  • Have a advanced knowledge of spoken and written English
  • Enjoy spending time with children

Location

The project is locate in Mbweni, Dar Es Salaam. This area is closed to the ocean, but it is slightly far from the city centre of Dar es Salaam. Kunduchi beaches and Mbudya Island are not far from the centre.

Duration

4 weeks to 1 year

Hosting Situation (Board and Lodging)

Volunteers stay at the host family. The host families provide 2 meals a day, while lunch is provided at the project.

  • A big supermarket is located on the way to the project
