Brief description and main aims

The main propose of the project is to work as a centre for disabled children with rehabilitation. It is run by the catholic church. The centre hosts children with various disabilities. A lot of them just appeared one day, so there is nothing known about their past and family circumstances. It is important to give them a home and care. The rehabilitation gives possibilities to work with the physically disabled.

Main Activities

The main activity of this project is to create a place for the children to feel at home and to feel wanted. There someone takes care about them und helps with all things they need. Older, just physically disabled ones go to public schools or to university. There is a rehabilitation centre. Sometimes there are activities outside the centre for all the children.

Volunteer tasks

The tasks of the volunteers may vary according to the daily schedule fixed by the organisation but the following are routine tasks of the centre:

  • To take care of the children: feeding, cleaning, observing/controlling, to get them adjust to “normal things”, e.g. wearing clothes, contact, pay attention to them
  • Provide them with tasks help
  • To help with the physiotherapy
  • Taking children to the hospital

Volunteer requirements / Skills

The volunteer is expected to have a profile with the following skills:

  • Willingness to work with children;
  • Be flexible and adaptable to a new culture and Christian religious habits and rules;
  • The ability to communicate verbally in Portuguese will further your experiences and the areas you can work in;
  • Skills or knowledge in arts and crafts are extremely helpful;
  • Experience with children of all ages;
  • Patience with children and the organisation.

Location

The project is located in one of the suburbs of Maputo, a residential area. Some services and facilities are provided in the area. It is very safe area and easily accessible by local transport.

Hosting Situation (Board and Lodging)

The volunteer will live with a host family.
