Ashraya is a special school for the mentally challenged children who have associated disabilities. We have children in the age group of 4 – 18 years. Our main focus is on the disabled children from the lower socio economic group.
The children are divided in four different classes based on the age. They receive formal education up to their capacity. Currently there are 30 students with 4 special educators, one physiotherapist, 3 helpers, 1 cook, 1 watch man apart from the super indent and the director.
The volunteer's task include:
Working with special children from deprived background.
Taking care of children and assisting them in their daily tasks.
Getting involved with the children in their daily activities.
Interacting with parents of the children along with the teachers.
The volunteers are placed in each group (3) of students for a considerable period of time to learn how to deal with these children and be able to observe the teachers and learn from them.
Volunteer requirements / Skills
The volunteer should be willing to work with mentally challenged children who have associated problems with physical disability, attention deficits etc.
Having technical knowledge and skills would be helpful. As well as administrative skills, knowledge in fund raising, cooking etc.
Ashraya is situated in a middle class residential urban area at Bangalore north. Students are transported from their homes by hired vehicles of Ashraya.
