Brief description and main aims

MUA - Mujeres en las Artes “Leticia de Oyuela” is a non-profit and non-governmental cultural organisation that contributes to the cultural-artistic development of Honduras through education, promotion and dissemination of contemporary art and different artistic expressions. MUA favours the opening to alternative spaces in the field of research, training and exchanges, encouraging access to art and culture as part of the comprehensive development of the society in Honduras. The main aims of MUA are:
  • Promote and encourage the participation of women in arts and culture.
  • Raise awareness among the Honduran population of the importance of cultural and artistic values within the education systems.
  • Coordinate efforts with governmental and private organisations, national and international individual and group initiatives, in favour of the national art and culture.

Main Activities

MUA develops, manages and carries out cultural and artistic proposals, coordinating activities of promotion, training, education and research through exhibitions, artwork, expo-sales of art and craftwork, fairs and competitions, conferences, meetings, workshops, among others. MUA offers art and culture training to the general audience, to educators and artists.

MUA has an education programme called EDUCA, a platform of cultural and artistic projects & programmes coordinated by the staff of MUA and with the support of Voluntariado Cultural EDUCA, a group of youth volunteers, aged 18-35. Some examples of these cultural and artistic projects & programmes are:
  • The programme EDUCAR a través del Arte, which works with 2,000+ children from public schools based in the historic centre of Tegucigalpa, carrying out creative art workshops, visits of artists, visits to art exhibitions and guided tours to get to know Tegucigalpa’s heritage.
  • The project CREARTE, which works with 5,000+ children and teenagers, with the aim of preventing violence and irregular migration, carrying out paint workshops, workshop and exhibition of postcards, shadow theatre, artistic interventions, and participations of dance groups and drum circles.
MUA is part of the Red de Promotores Culturales de Latinoamérica y el Caribe, a network of organisations that generates and promotes a joint workspace for producers in the areas of contemporary dance, theatre and music in Latin America and the Caribbean, carrying out exchanges and artist-in-residence programmes.
